How to remove the viewport background image from 3dsMax

Sometimes while working on a project in Max you need to add a background… and sometimes you need to remove it too.  Removing the image is not quite as straight forward.

Well thanks to 3dsMax guru Fred Ruff we can get rid of the annoying errors when opening a scene!

Portlandia Iphone Skit

Recently while at Bent Image Lab I was able help on a project for the IFC show Portlandia.  It was a short piece that was really fun to work on.  Especially since i live in Portland and enjoy the show!

I used an existing model of an Iphone and did a physics simulation of the phone falling in slow motion.  Once i had a simulation we were happy with I light and rendered the scene for compositing.  I even got in the credits on the show(Ep. 4) as 3d animator hahah

Started at Bent Image Labs

Well I guess that I’ve been there for a little while now… about 7 months?!  It doesn’t really feel that long though.  I’ve met a lot of great people and been able to work on some great projects that I will be posting about as soon as I am able!  I can’t forget to mention being around some great folks in the stop-motion world! So cool!

Apex Bar Mercury Ad

I got the opportunity to do an ad for this great beer bar Apex. It was for the Pedalpalooza edition of the Portland Mercury and with Apex embracing beer and all things two wheeled they decided on a full page ad. I had a pretty good amount of creative input on this and not much time to do it. It was decided that I would start with two styles and than allow them to pick which one was more to their liking.

So I worked out these two potential layouts

 

 

 

 

 

The desicion was made for the easier to read layout #1 instead of the photo collage layout #2.  After some quick rounds of feedback and changes, like adding pinball picture(dont forget the pinball!) it was 0 finalized and went to print.  I have to say I was initially worried if some of the detail of the pictures would be lost but, in the end it turned out great.  Just like the whole experience working with Apex!

Need For Speed: Nitro

Looking at those old car renders made me think of some other car renders I had done. A while ago at Applied Cinematics we got the chance to work with CincoDesign on the cover on of one of the biggest racing game franchises: Need For Speed. Helping CincoDesign with the key art for Need For Speed: Nitro was a great experience, especially for someone who is “into” cars like myself. I really do like seeing things I was able to help with on store shelves too. To note, I worked on the render, all typography and post work done by the wizards at CincoDesign. Maybe i should render some more cars…
